Each patient will have an extensive evaluation which includes a thorough history and physical assessment, laboratory testing that carefully screens for the potential causes and effects of obesity in the body, and the psychosocial issues associated with obesity. This latter component of the evaluation is designed to develop plans for future behavioral modification.*
Treatment plans are of two types, one that is structured and uses group therapy techniques, and one that is more individualized:
Group Program
This is based on the OptifastTM Diet Formula which is a twelve week low-calorie, mostly liquid diet plan designed to remove on average 50 to 60 pounds of weight, followed by an additional 6 – 8 week transition period back to traditional food. As important as the diet formula is a weekly group session behavior modification program throughout the five months designed to prevent relapse and weight gain. The cost includes the above history, physical, and psychosocial assessments, and the diet formula throughout the period.
Individual Program
This program offers individually tailored approaches that may include low-calorie diets or formulas, appetite suppressants and related medications, counseling, and support sessions or some combination of these therapies, the length of such individualized programs is determined by mutual doctor-patient alignment on goals and objectives.
Health insurance companies vary in their coverage of such services and most do not provide payment. We will assist the patient by providing medical documentation and receipts where applicable, but it will be up to the patient to obtain reimbursement when it is possible. The cost of services will be on a fee-for-service basis, with payment due at the time of the services. Methods of financing the costs will be made available.
*The physical exam, and most if not all of the lab testing may be covered by an individual’s health insurance at a separate visit. If so, a credit will be allowed to the initial evaluation fee.
